Arctic Iceland – visiting the island of birds on Grímsey

I never expected to say this, but I encountered a bird I strongly dislike.

During our Iceland Circumnavigation expedition trip, we landed on Grímsey on a moody yet beautiful day. This small island, located 40 kilometers north of Iceland, is the only part of the country within the Arctic Circle at 66° North, making it a unique attraction. While many are drawn to Grímsey for this reason, I’m personally here for the nature and birdwatching.

I have a fondness for exploring off-the-beaten-path locations, and in a popular country like Iceland, such places can be challenging to find. However, Grímsey remains quite remote. Exploring Iceland by sea with Adventure Canada allows us to reach almost any location, disembark with zodiacs, and explore on the water easily, which is much more challenging for independent travelers.
